Q. Why isn't my browser displaying all the links on this site properly? How can I solve this?
A. You probably have some overenthusiastic ad blocking software (e.g. Norton etc.) that is hiding the links from you. The solution is to set ad blocking to disabled or off for the spainmagic.com domain. You should then be able to see all the links on the site.

The exact way to do this depends on the ad blocking software you have. Typically you use the security control panel, click Ad Blocking then add www.spainmagic.com to the list of sites where advertising is acceptable. Another way is to simply turn-off ad blocking altogether. This is generally not a bad idea because this kind of software is pretty dumb and often does more harm than good.

Q. I have tried to place I paid ad but I was unable to complete the payment on the checkout page. Is there another way I can pay for the ad so that it goes live on the site?
A. If you enter the details of a paid ad but do not sucessfully complete the payment on the RBS WorldPay checkout page your ad will be stored in the Unconfirmed Ads section of your account. Another way to pay for your ad so that it goes live on the site is to go to PayPal.com and make an online payment of the same amount to (this email address is all you need to identify us as the payee) also email us to tell us which ad (or ads) the payment is for. We will then activate the ad(s) for you.

Q. I have received a suspicious looking reply to my ad. What should I do?
A. SELLERS BEWARE! Advertisers have been receiving bogus replies to ads. Suspicious replies should be treated with caution. SpainMagic is aware of the problem and now has multiple safeguards in place to help protect advertisers. We have also reported incidents to the police. This kind of fraud is affecting all kinds of advertising both online and offline. It has cost individuals and companies millions so please take it seriously.

Identifying Scam Replies
In some cases a 'buyer' will offer to send you a cheque for more than your asking price. Remember, if an offer sounds too good to be true it probably is. Some say they are acting as an agent for a third party and ask you to send them a commission payment in return for their cheque. These cheques turn out to be fake or stolen, and although your bank may accept them intitally they will later bounce and you could end up with bank charges. Worse still, if you have already sent or handed over goods or money, you will have lost them. These scam replies are typically written in strange or bad English. A scammer will typically want to remain distant from you and not wish to see the goods before buying. It is a form of email spamming, except that the spammer doesn't actually know your email address.

The following steps can be taken...

  • Ignore suspicious replies however tempting the offer may seem. Feel free to forward a copy to us to help us to reduce the problem.
  • Scammers typically use free email addresses from yahoo.com or hotmail.com etc. Obvious scam replies can be forwarded to abuse@the_provider's_domain (e.g. abuse@yahoo.com). The email providers can then shut down the scammer's email account and help prevent other people from entering into a deal they will regret.
  • Know who you are dealing with. Confirm your buyer's name, phone number and real address.
  • Don't be afraid to ask the buyer questions. Bogus buyers will typically know or care little about things relating to what you have advertised and so can easily be caught out.
  • Consider forms of payment other than cheques or 'wired' money. For example, arrange for cash on delivery or use a trusted online payment service or pay for an escrow service. It's worth remembering too that bank drafts and company cheques can usually be validated by calling the issuing bank or company and confirming the amount and payee details.
  • Do not send any goods or money until you are completely sure that your payment is safe.
  • STOP AND THINK. Be patient. Resist pressure to act immediately.
  • Remember that genuine buyers will usually be happy to work with you on ways to validate their identity and payment.

    Q. How do I prepare pictures to put in my ad?
    A. If you want to upload one or more images with your ad you will need one or more digital image files in either JPG or GIF format and the size of each image file must be 40 kilobytes or less. It is best to prepare the images in advance so they are ready to upload from your computer when you place your ad. If a picture file is bigger than 40 KB in size you must reduce it before uploading. Typically, to do this with a photo, resize (sometimes called resampling) the pěcture so it it about 300 pixels wide and then save it with a new filename as a JPG at about 50% quality. This will usually give good results is easily done with most picture editing programs. If you use Windows® and don't have any image editing software, we recommend Pixel Grease which can be downloaded for free.
